Colouring the EU at SXSW

The EU commissioned us to make a colouring wall for South by Southwest festival, celebrating the fantastic relationship the European Union shares with the USA.

The European Union is the single largest investor in the United States, supporting millions of jobs and billions of dollars in exports. To describe the scale of this global relationship our artwork looks around the planet from Europe over the Atlantic Ocean to the USA.

Yellow trails highlight trade routes between the EU and the USA, with products and services being exchanged by sea, air, and through two EU satellites.

Across Europe each of the 28 EU member states are represented by a landmark building in the canvas, featuring a mix of historic and contemporary architecture. The buildings are nestled in a landscape of trees and mountains with a solar and wind farm, a music festival and a high speed train.

To create the feeling of peace, freedom and equality that Europe enjoys from the European Union, Maria illustrated people interacting, walking, talking, dancing and relaxing together.

Europe has the world’s largest and most open market, which is illustrated with people stood working together on phones and computers, whilst others shake hands on a business deal and exchange goods.

The canvas was coloured by visitors to the EU’s venue at SXSW festival in Austin, Texas.
