Birmingham colouring canvas at Ikea store opening

Ikea commissioned us to illustrate a giant colouring wall for the opening day of their new central Birmingham order and collection point.

Ikea wanted a design that combined Scandi style with Birmingham. We created an illustration with a mid century modern feel, taking inspiration from Ikea's 1950s origins.

We illustrated Birmingham's landmark buildings in a deliberately flat 2D way interspersed between traditional Scandinavian folk inspired flowers and trees.

Birmingham is said to have more canals than Venice! We gave them a fabric swatch style flavour in the colouring wall.

At the Ikea store opening everyone was free to pick up a paint pen and colour. Loads of shoppers stopped to contribute and everyone did a fantastic job.

People loved being able to colour in famous landmarks from Birmingham, spotting all the buildings they recognised. The buildings included the Bullring, Brindley Place, The Mailbox, the Library of Birmingham and the Botanical Gardens.
